Aims

Pedal MCR is a registered not for profit project; owned and democratically run in a co-operative way by it's directors.

Our Constitution

Our vision is a less car-dominated city, in which people choose to use the bicycle as a form of transport, which benefits their health and the environment.

Our mission is to work on practical and imaginative solutions to enable people to use the bicycle as their main mode of transport.

Our main aim is to provide bicycle education for people from all backgrounds, particularly those from marginalised groups, in order to make cycling a sustainable and viable transport solution.

Mission

Pedal MCR is a collective dedicated to recycling bicycles, offering mechanical education, and promoting bicycling by helping people of all ages and backgrounds to obtain, maintain, and repair bicycles.

We are a not for profit organisation that is committed to promoting the benefits of bicycles as an energy-efficient, economical, non-polluting form of transportation, and as a healthy lifestyle choice, by providing access to affordable equipment and education. We hope to do this within a non-hierarchical framework, and in a way that is least harmful to the environment and all it's inhabitants.

We aim to:

Provide bicycle education for people in Manchester in order to make bicycling a sustainable mode of transport

Run programs that specifically target people from marginalised groups to obtain, maintain and ride bicycles..

Bring together cyclists from a variety of cycling backgrounds to build a stronger cycling community in Manchester, through organising cycling and social events throughout the year.

Empower cyclists to feel part of their cycling community, through grass-roots working.

Promote the bicycle as a form of transport over car culture and its varied benefits. Riding a bicycle instead of driving a car has been proven to help people keep fit and healthy, improve their mental health and reduce pollution (The British Nutrition Foundation , 2005).

Organise events where people can share skills, experience and knowledge with people from different generations, religions, abilities and cultures.

Not for Profit
No profits shall be shared amongst members, any profit shall go back into the project to be spent on work to promote cycling. If the project ceases and is in credit then any remaining monies shall be given to cycling related charities or organisations decided by the group.

How we work:

  • We are determined to make a real contribution to the quality of life in Manchester and to leave each volunteer and participant with the knowledge that they have successfully striven for a genuine sustainable future.

  • We are not afraid to take risks, developing projects that government or private businesses will not or cannot. We are values-led rather than revenue driven.

  • We work at a grass-roots level, with all members of the group being local cyclists. We rely on the local knowledge and practical assistance of volunteers. In all our relationships, both internal and external, we seek to be equitable and open and to work to the highest standards of inclusiveness and sustainability.

  • Or directors work in a non-hierarchical and co-operative manner, making decisions by consensus in order to value the opinions and ideas of all members. We are a not for profit group and organise some activities that are free of charge to participants whenever funding is available. This is because we believe that activities should be available to all, no matter their economic position.

  • We reject all forms and systems of domination and discrimination including, but not limited to, patriarchy, racism, and religious fundamentalism of all creeds. We embrace the full dignity of all creatures (and within this we seek to offer only vegan products).

  • We aim to be a vegan space. This can be difficult to maintain as many people come in wearing animal products or with bike components containing animal derivatives. However, we seek to promote this as far as we can. Thus, we cannot accept donations of leather goods nor allow non-vegan food or drink to be consumed within the workshop. We also try to only stock vegan products. If you are aware of a non vegan product in our workshop please don't hesitate to let us know.
